This morning I tried to remember the last time I was ninety percent sure and wrong. I couldn’t, and that’s the problem: memory keeps only the wins. So from this week, every conviction on this page keeps its date and its number, and I score it in public when it resolves.
Note
Above the desk. In 1950 the SWAC, a computer in Los Angeles, kept its entire memory, 256 words, on a row of cathode-ray tubes, and a stray flicker could wipe it. I pinned its photo above my desk the week QG got its journal. Seventy-six years later, the question is the same: what a machine should keep.
